What the Homeowner is Responsible For:

Your Preparations

Before seasonal work on your yard commences, we ask that you ensure your yard is free of BBQs, dog runs, or any other items that may interfere with landscaping. Please be aware that the landscaping company will not move any items from your yard but will pass over your home to the next clean lot.

Lawn and Tree Maintenance

Newly Sodded Lawns

  • New sod should be watered TWICE daily for the first 2 weeks. The sod should be kept damp. A good rule of thumb is if you lift a piece of the new sod up, the ground underneath should be wet.

  • All traffic across new sod should be kept to a minimum as it separates seams and disturbs the underlying grade.

  • The first mowing can usually occur about 3 weeks after installation or when sod reaches a height of 3”-3.5” tall.

  • Adjust mower height to approximately 2.5” and be certain that the blades are sharp.

  • Do not water the day before mowing, as this will mat the new sod.

  • Repeat mowing procedures once a week during the growing season. Do not remove more than 1/3 of the grass blade per mowing.

  • Once established, a new lawn will perform better when watered heavily once every 7-9 days versus lightly every second day. This promotes deeper roots.

Trees and Shrubs

  • At all times trees and shrubs should have moisture. Roots must never be allowed to dry out.

  • Once the ground is dry 4” below surface, it is time to water again.

  • If you go on holidays, saturate your trees and shrubs before leaving, or ask a neighbor to water for you.

  • Maintain tree well around tree. Do not allow weeds and grass to fill-in tree well or shrub bed.

  • Keep the dirt level in the tree well. Do not pile up around the trunk of the tree as this will choke the tree and cause it to eventually die.

  • Trees and shrubs require fertilizer to promote growth and resist disease and insects.

  • Slow acting fertilizers can be applied at any time throughout the season.

  • Mineral uptake is greatest throughout May and July when the trees and shrubs are producing most of their new growth.

  • Always follow instruction as over fertilizing can seriously damage plant material.

Winterizing Your Trees and Shrubs

  • Before the ground freezes it is advisable to increase watering of trees and shrubs so that the rootball is solidly watered in when ground is completely frozen.

  • During periods of long Chinooks, trees and shrubs may require more watering to keep rootball frozen and to prevent damage to the root system
